Hong Kong's top universities (HKU, CUHK, HKUST, PolyU, CityU) consistently rank in the global top 100, teach in English, and sit at the gateway between mainland China and global finance. HKD 145,000-185,000 per year covers tuition; the IANG (Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates) visa grants 2 years of unconditional post-study stay to find work, with extensions and PR pathway after 7 years.

Hong Kong: world-class English-medium universities at the gateway to China

Hong Kong's top three universities — HKU (#17), HKUST (#47) and CUHK (#45) — all rank in the QS world top 50, teach in English, and operate at the intersection of mainland China and global capital markets. Combined with PolyU (#57), CityU (#62) and HK Baptist (#252), Hong Kong has 6 universities in the QS top 300 — the highest density of any city in Asia.

Tuition is HKD 145,000-185,000 per year (USD 18,500-23,500), substantially lower than US private peers. The IANG (Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates) visa allows graduates to stay 24 months without job offer or salary requirement, with renewable extensions and a path to permanent residence after 7 years.

Application requirements and routes

Non-local applicants apply to Hong Kong universities directly through each university's portal (HKU's UMaster system, HKUST's myAdmission, etc.). There is no central UCAS-equivalent. Most universities have a single Main Round (deadline mid-November to mid-January for Fall entry) and rolling spaces filled until April.

Cost of living and scholarships

Hong Kong's cost of living is high, particularly housing — but most universities provide subsidized hall (dormitory) accommodation for the first 1-2 years at HKD 12,000-25,000 / year. Total annual budget: HKD 230,000-280,000 (USD 29,000-36,000) including tuition.

HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund: covers full tuition for top international students; HKU Foundation Entrance Scholarships, HKUST Joint UG Scholarship, CUHK Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship are merit-based and offer tuition + living allowance combinations. Apply through the main university application — separate scholarship applications usually required.
