Australia Subclass 500 Student Visa 2026: GTE, English, and the New 485 Rules
What the 2024 visa overhaul means for prospective students — and how to still build a 5-year pathway from study to PR.
Australia tightened student-visa rules sharply from mid-2024: higher IELTS floor (6.0 from 5.5), 2-stage 'Genuine Student' test replacing the old GTE statement, financial requirement raised to AUD 29,710 in savings, and the 485 Graduate Visa age cap dropped from 50 to 35. Despite the changes, the Group of Eight (Melbourne, Sydney, ANU, UNSW, UQ, Monash, UWA, Adelaide) remain among the world's top 50 and offer a clean study → 485 → skilled migration path.
Australia in 2026: a tougher but still rewarding pathway
Australia's international education sector underwent its largest single-year tightening in 2024-2025: the IELTS floor for student visas rose from 5.5 to 6.0, financial proof requirements jumped to AUD 29,710, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) test was replaced by a stricter two-stage Genuine Student Test (GST), and the Subclass 485 Graduate visa age cap dropped from 50 to 35 (50 for Master by Research / PhD).
Despite this, Australia retains powerful structural advantages: 7 of its Group of Eight universities are in the QS top 100, English-medium teaching, large existing diaspora communities, and a clear pathway from study (subclass 500) → post-study work (subclass 485) → skilled migration (491/190/189). Studying in regional cities — Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra, Newcastle, Wollongong, Cairns — provides bonus migration points and longer stay options.
Subclass 500: the student visa
Apply for the subclass 500 only AFTER receiving a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from your Australian university or institution. CoE is generated within 1-4 weeks of accepting your offer and paying the tuition deposit (typically 50% of first semester).
- CoE from registered Australian institution (CRICOS-listed)
- Genuine Student Test (GST): 5 mandatory questions covering past education, ties to home country, why this course, why Australia, post-study plans
- Financial capacity: AUD 29,710 in savings + first-year tuition + return airfare (AUD 2,000) + AUD 7,362 per dependent
- English: IELTS 6.0+ overall (no band below 5.5), or equivalent TOEFL / PTE
- Health insurance: Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the entire visa duration, ~AUD 600-1,200/year
- Health examination + character checks (police clearance for some countries)
Visa fee: AUD 1,600 (single applicant). Processing time: 4-6 weeks for low-risk countries, 8-12 weeks for higher risk. Apply at least 3 months before semester start.
The new Genuine Student Test (GST)
The GST replaced the GTE in early 2024. Unlike GTE, which was a single 300-word statement, GST is a structured questionnaire with 5 standard questions answered in 150 words each. The Department of Home Affairs assesses internal consistency, plausibility of career narrative, and ties to home country. Common rejection patterns:
- Inconsistent career narrative — e.g., bachelor's in finance suddenly switching to nursing in Australia
- Generic answers about Australia's 'beautiful nature' without program-specific motivation
- Vague post-study plans (must specify intended return / career, not 'gain experience and decide')
- Family members already living in Australia not properly disclosed
- Country-specific risk profile — Pakistan, Nigeria, parts of India see higher refusal rates and need stronger documentation

Frequently asked questions
Can I switch courses after starting?
Yes — you can switch to another course at the same education level (e.g., Master to Master) without a new visa. Switching DOWN a level (e.g., Master to Bachelor) requires a new visa application. Switching universities at the same level is fine but you must get a new CoE within 14 days.
Is studying in regional Australia worth it?
Yes — regional study (anywhere outside Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane CBDs) provides 5 bonus migration points + longer 485 visa (3 years for Bachelor/Master) + access to subclass 491 regional skilled visa with priority processing.
What happens if my English score is below 6.0?
You can take a 10-30 week ELICOS English bridging program at an Australian English language centre, then progress to your main course on the same student visa. Many universities (Monash, RMIT, UTS) operate their own English colleges with direct entry pathways.
