Can AI Actually Pick the Best University For You?
We tested 4 AI matching engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, EduAgent) on 100 student profiles. Here's what the data showed.
What we tested
We took 100 anonymized successful applicant profiles from 2023-24 (admitted to a Top-50 university) and asked four AI engines: ChatGPT (GPT-4 Turbo, May 2024), Google Gemini Advanced, Perplexity Pro, and EduAgent's matching engine — to recommend a 12-school list. We then measured: (1) overlap with the schools the student actually got into, (2) appropriate reach/target/safety distribution, (3) presence of factual errors (wrong tuition, deprecated programs, lapsed scholarships).

Why generic AI struggles with university matching
Three structural reasons:
1. **Stale data.** Generic LLMs are trained on snapshots that may be 12-24 months old. Tuition figures, acceptance rates, deadlines and program closures move faster than that.
2. **No admissions data.** ChatGPT and Gemini don't have year-by-year admit/yield data joined to applicant profiles. They reason from correlations in text, not actual selectivity statistics.
3. **No GPA scaling.** A Chinese 85/100 is not a US 3.5 GPA — it varies by institution and major. Generic LLMs apply linear conversions and miss the contextual reading admissions officers use.
What AI does well
Outside numerical matching, generic AI is genuinely useful for: (1) drafting emails to admissions offices and recommenders, (2) generating second-pass questions for visa interview rehearsal, (3) summarizing program webpages, (4) identifying overlooked safety schools. Use generic AI as a research aid; use a domain-specific tool for the actual matching.
